Old Time Relijun + the Gossip, Point Ephemere, Paris, 19-11-05
The Gossip were up first. Their populist disco was not to everyone's taste. To some it was too 'pop'. On the other hand, the singer's burped intermissions and her drumathon Aaliyah cover was an effective way of giving time to the guitarist to change his guitar strings.
To give you an idea of what The Gossip sounded like, here's a thought: cross breed ESG rip-offs on K records C.O.C.O with The Bellrays.
What a voice, what a badge ! I'd love to have both.
Old Time Relijun's lead singer replaced the Gossip's growl-soul with sundry whines and throat singing. Gone was the dress too and replaced by a fetching pair of grey boxer shorts, which jingled to his every move.
Old Time Relijun's sound combines the disco beat with a much more frenetic and scratchy approach. The double bass is great here, with a wider palette than your usual electric 4-string.
Old Time Relijun's drummer is a sweetie. When she is mid-beat she pulls these tortured expressions of anxiety and anticipation, which make her more endearing but also add to the environing tension.
Comme encore le chanteur de Old Time Relijun à fait un peu de deep throat.
